TOWSON, MD Amazon is delivering more than 1,500 full time jobs to a new 855,000 square foot fulfillment center in Baltimore County. Associates working at the $225 million facility under construction at Tradepoint Atlantic in Sparrows Point will pick, pack and ship customer items such as electronics, books, housewares and toys.
“This is what job creation looks like: a world class company investing in the region, bringing 1,500 new jobs to Baltimore County. We are pleased to welcome Amazon to the growing list of companies with a Tradepoint Atlantic address,” said Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz.
Amazon joins Under Armour, FedEx Ground, Pasha Automotive, Access World, Harley Davidson and others as tenants of Tradepoint Atlantic, a 3,100 acre development in eastern Baltimore County that is one of the largest economic development projects on the East Coast.
“We’re excited to open a new, state-of-the-art fulfillment center in historic Sparrows Point and to continue innovating in a state committed to providing great opportunities for jobs and customer experience. Maryland has an incredible workforce, and we are happy to add to the more than 5,000 associates already serving customers in the state,” said Sanjay Shah, Amazon’s Vice President of North America Customer Fulfillment.
The Amazon fulfillment center comes on the heels of 425 jobs at a FedEx Ground facility that opened at Tradepoint Atlantic in July 2017. A new Under Armour e-commerce house will bring 1,000 more jobs at full capacity. The 1.3 million square foot Under Armour facility is scheduled to open in 2018.
“Tradepoint Atlantic is pleased to add Amazon to its portfolio of tenants seeking the logistical and supply chain advantages our unique industrial park can provide. It is further proof that Tradepoint Atlantic is a destination of choice for top brands seeking a 21st century multi-modal logistics platform,” said Eric Gilbert, Chief Development Officer for Tradepoint Atlantic.
Bringing Jobs Back to The Point
“There are more than 17,000 jobs on the horizon when Tradepoint Atlantic is fully developed. But jobs are already coming back to the Point. By this time next year, there will be more people working at Sparrows Point than when the steel mill closed there in 2012,” added County Executive Kamenetz.
When fully developed, Tradepoint Atlantic will generate 17,000 permanent jobs in the Baltimore region, plus another 21,000 jobs during construction. Economic impact is projected to top $3 billion by 2025, according to a Sage Policy Group study.
Baltimore County Supporting Job Growth
“Baltimore County continues to proactively put key pieces in place to support development of Tradepoint Atlantic,” said Kamenetz.
In October 2017, Baltimore County submitted a $25 million request to the U.S. Department of Transportation for infrastructure improvements and expansion of aging marine facilities at Tradepoint Atlantic.
The County also initiated creation of the Chesapeake Enterprise Zone, established a foreign trade zone to expand global commerce, and is facilitating employee recruitment and screening for companies locating at Tradepoint Atlantic.
