Darlene B. Smith, Ph.D., Provost for the University of Baltimore, Dr. Maria Thompson, President, Coppin State University, and Girl Scouts Katherine C. Lay and Sidney Strong were elected to the 2017-2018 Girl Scouts of Central Maryland Board of Directors.
The 28-member board represents a cross section of racial, ethnic and religious diversity. The board’s expertise spans the professional spectrum and includes members with accounting, banking, construction, finance, fundraising, government, human resources, law, marketing, medical, academic, public relations and STEM backgrounds.
“We are excited about what each of our board members brings to the organization – especially our new Girl Scout members,” says Violet M. Apple, Girl Scouts of Central Maryland’s Chief Executive Officer. This is the second year that Girl Scout members have been invited to be a part of the board. “It is a great opportunity for them to learn about the inner workings of the council and to experience how a board of directors conducts business,” Apple states. “I am thrilled to be able to provide them with this business exposure.” The girl-member board positions are for one-term allowing more Girl Scouts to have this unique leadership experience.
