Fifth-grade teacher Thomas Dennison of Havre de Grace Elementary School received the $25,000 Milken Educator Award, a prestigious honor referred to as “the Oscars of teaching” by Teacher magazine. Milken Family Foundation Co-Founder Mike Milken presented Dennison with the award in December at an assembly held at his home school. “Mr. Dennison’s commitment and dedication to the students at Havre de Grace Elementary is apparent from the moment you walk into his classroom,” said HCPS superintendent Barbara P. Canavan, who joined Milken at the award’s presentation. “Students are engaged and there is an actual ‘buzz’ in the room; the excitement is contagious and you know that you are experiencing the commitment and dedication of a truly special teacher.” More than $138 million in funding, $68 million of which are designated for individual $25,000 awards, has been devoted to the overall Awards program, which offers development opportunities for its recipients throughout their careers.
