Seidenberg Protzko Eye Associates
From cataract surgery to dry eye disease, technology plays an important role at the ophthalmology practice of Seidenberg Protzko Eye Associates. Two of the four offices are located in Harford County, one in Cecil County (Elkton) and the newest location in Kent County (Chestertown). Each are filled with state-of-the-art equipment that enables the doctors and staff to provide the highest quality, most advanced and experienced eye care to patients – an important part of the Seidenberg Protzko mission.
“Technology helps us to give patients a more precise diagnosis, and it ultimately leads to better treatment,” says Susan Taylor, patient services coordinator for the practice. Even though technology is in the forefront, she says the emphasis of the eight doctors and staff at the practice is on patient-centered care. “Because our patients are our first priority, we try to find the best ways to treat them, and that involves using the latest technology.”
For example, Taylor says treating dry eye disease used to be a trial-and-error process. Now, the most advanced equipment available helps doctors determine the best treatment options by actually pinpointing which of the three layers of tears is not functioning properly for the patient, or if there might be another underlying medical cause for the symptoms.
Seidenberg Protzko is also a local leader in cataract surgery, and it was the first practice in the state of Maryland to offer laser cataract surgery with the Catalys® Precision Laser System, designed specifically for this use. The Catalys enables doctors to increase the accuracy, precision and customization of surgery significantly more than what has been available through traditional manual techniques. Taylor notes that cataracts affect 22 million people over the age of 40. For Seidenberg Protzko, that means the Baby Boomer generation, which is already a large part of the practice’s patients.
“The population is aging, and with aging comes cataracts,” Taylor says. “More than ever before, people are staying active longer and want to maintain a high quality of life. We want to make sure we have the latest technology for our patients’ comfort so that we can maintain or increase their quality of vision.”
Not only does laser cataract surgery with the Catalys provide the patient with precise surgery procedures, it gives the doctors the ability to treat astigmatism, reducing the need for a patient to wear glasses after the surgery.

While the aging population may be a large portion of its business, Seidenberg Protzko keeps its eye on the entire family, spanning all generations. “We see entire families – from infants to parents to grandparents and in some cases great grandparents,” Taylor says. “Our reputation for excellence in patient care has helped us to grow, because we treat people throughout their lifetimes.”
The team is well known for its pediatric ophthalmology success in Harford County and surrounding areas. Led by Kimberly Neutze, D.O., the pediatric group emphasizes that there is no substitute for a professional eye examination for infants and children. It should be performed by the age of 3 and continue at least every two years. The doctors will check for common childhood eye issues such as strabismus, amblyopia, ptosis and reflective errors, and they will recommend the best course of treatment. In addition, the doctors on the pediatric team are often called to assist with newborn eye care necessary due to infection or trauma during birth, congenital abnormalities or premature births.
Established in Harford County in 1998, Seidenberg Protzko has successfully grown by keeping up with the latest technologies and by expanding its eye care services. In addition to traditional eye care and surgery, Seidenberg Protzko also offers cosmetic eyelid surgery and reconstructive eyelid surgery. Taylor explains that baggy or droopy eyelids are a common part of aging. These can often result in irritation, dryness, tearing, sensitivity or infection, and they can affect proper vision. Seidenberg Protzko also offers cosmetic and reconstructive eyelid surgery.
