Sommelier Debi Bell-Matassa and Chef Michael Matassa are one of Baltimore’s highly successful husband and wife restaurant teams. They ran the popular Fusion Grille in Fallston for six years and are now well-known for Alchemy, their edgy Hampden restaurant serving New American cuisine.
After years of searching for the perfect location near their home in Bel Air, they are finally open in the former Open Door Café space in Bel Air Town Center on Baltimore Pike. The transformation has been nothing short of alchemy, by its Renaissance definition, turning base metals into gold.

The space has been opened up and gleams with copper topped tables emblazoned with the Alchemy Elements logo. The bar is on trend with the cocktail revolution according to Debi, who says, “My bar is just incredible. The cocktails are exquisite including ice, infused with herbs and liquors that enhance the taste buds. We call it Liquid Culture.”
The dining room is lush and clubby, with dark banquettes and soft lighting. Alchemy Elements will be a unique dining experience, building on their success with Alchemy, which doesn’t have a bar or outside tables. The wine list is managed by Debi, known for pairings with Chef Michael’s changing menu, which is focused on the highest quality ingredients available, hand cut meats and all in-house creations. Chef Michael is passionate about using the freshest high-quality ingredients to be obtained, in fresh and unique ways. This is his trademark.
The focus on hospitality and customer satisfaction extends throughout. “All staff must go through training in our Hampden location,” says Debi. “A huge focal point of Alchemy Elements is to build a culture around the customer, get to know people by name, and give them a reason to support my business,” Debi notes.
The love and passion for the business is apparent, with attention to every detail. They believe that dining out is an experience to be reveled in every sense, starting with the stunning visual atmosphere, well-trained servers, intriguing cocktails and fresh high-quality ingredients, forming a uniquely delicious menu with perfectly paired wines.
