It was at a job fair during her senior year at what is now Notre Dame of Maryland University that Andrea N. Kirk, CFP®, CRPC®, first became intrigued with the idea of forging a career as a financial advisor.

“I stopped at the booth of American Express Financial Advisors and thought the idea of helping people realize their financial goals throughout a long-term relationship was interesting,” says Kirk, who graduated from Notre Dame with a degree in business finance management and minor in psychology.

After graduation, Kirk was hired by American Express Financial Advisors and began an intensive advisor training program before opting to become a franchise owner, a position to which she transitioned in 2002. “It has been a really exciting process,” she says. “I was committed to getting certified as a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ practitioner, which means one must pass an intensive two-day test and keep up with continuing education requirements.”

By 2005, American Express Financial Advisors was spun off to become Ameriprise Financial Services, Inc., and Kirk continued her career focusing on retirement planning and distribution planning, investments, insurance, education savings and financial strategies for women. “We have a three-minute questionnaire on our website, our ‘3-Minute Confident Retirement® check,’ to which we direct new clients,” she says. “This questionnaire gives our clients immediate feedback about their readiness for retirement and where they stand compared to their peers. Clients bring it to our meeting, and we work from there … this is a good start to help people focus on their goals, then stick to a plan to reach them.”

Kirk, who was nominated as a Five Star Wealth Manager1 in the February 2015 issue of Baltimore Magazine, also has a 100 percent client satisfaction rating2 (“The feedback I get from clients helps me to continue to grow and improve,” she says), believes that the biggest mistake people make is not seeking the help of a financial advisor as soon as they enter the workforce. But regardless of what age they first consult a financial advisor, Kirk says she is always pleased to see people make progress toward their goals, whether it is a goal of a second home or planning for a child’s college education.
