Ocean City Brewing Co. is taking over an 8,500-square-foot space at the Boulevard at Box Hill in Abingdon. Joe’s Crab Shack, the current tenant, announced its closure September 9.
O.C. Brewing Co. hopes to open a second location in Abingdon by the end of October.
Unlike the Baltimore restaurants that have laid fresh roots in Ocean City, such as Ropewalk Tavern and Abbey Burger Bistro, the beach pub is heading in the opposite direction for its expansion. Owner Joshua Shores splits his time between homes in Bel Air and Ocean City.
“We want to focus where we can actually be there every day and focus on our brand, and Bel Air just gave us the opportunity where we could be there every day to keep an eye on things,” Shores said.
The taphouse will offer more than 150 draft beers and seat 200-plus guests. The family-style restaurant will include an outdoor playground, craft beer pub area and live entertainment on the weekends.
In addition to expanding its physical presence in Maryland, the restaurant is also growing its offerings. The restaurant recently added its own vodka line, and will start pouring its own house wine next year.
Opening a second taphouse in Abingdon will ad another independent eater to Harford County, which is primarily populated with chains.
“It’s just going to add more appeal to the area,” Shores said.
