Beacon Staffing Alternatives, Inc., a supplemental staffing company headquartered in Aberdeen, is marking its 30th year of providing businesses with the staff they need and employees with the jobs they want. Sheryl Davis Kohl sees opportunity everywhere she looks. As the co-founder and owner, she works with clients and employers to place administrative, clerical, light industrial and technical temporary employees, permanent full-time employees, and direct hire workers. Her team is always searching for positions to fit myriad employment needs and a variety of schedules.
Kohl says meeting with all candidates in person is the best way to match them with the job they’re looking for and helps to ensure the candidate meets or exceeds the customer’s expectations. Her company develops detailed job descriptions to be sure customers receive the ideal candidate.
She utilizes different resources to screen employees based on customer expectations and job specifications. A variety of background checks are provided to authenticate education backgrounds, criminal and driving records and professional licenses. Clerical skills are evaluated with an online testing program. Once an employee is placed in a job, Beacon Staffing handles all payroll-processing requirements, issues paychecks, and handles all federal, state and local taxes, unemployment insurance and workers compensation insurance requirements.

Beacon Staffing faces a number of challenges in the workplace every day, particularly with regard to the effects of the economy and local legislation on business. However, the demand for Beacon Staffing’s services has remained constant. “It’s a stable workforce,” Kohl says, adding, “We are still seeing a need for project based and seasonal hiring.” Beacon Staffing is prepared to meet customer needs with a ready pool of prospective employees and they are always working to recruit resources. If the right employee isn’t among Beacon Staffing’s pool of candidates, Kohl says her company will recruit that person. “There’s always someone looking for job opportunities.”
In the past 30 years, one aspect has changed drastically – recruitment. Once completely paper-based, almost every step in the application process can be completed online. Employees can apply, post resumes and search for job opportunities online. Beacon Staffing posts job openings on their own website, and on job boards such as CareerBuilder, Monster, Indeed and Zip Recruiter.
