Peter Marsh Joins Beltway Team as Regional Vice President for Comcast Business Services
Comcast Business, a unit of Comcast Cable, has appointed Peter Marsh as regional vice president for Comcast Business Services, overseeing the company’s Beltway Region, which serves Maryland, Southern Delaware, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and portions of West Virginia and North Carolina. In this role, Marsh will be responsible for spearheading the continued growth of Comcast Business Services in this region, while also developing targeted sales and marketing operations that will further expand the company’s presence within the local business community.

“Peter has proven his capabilities time and time again, with record-breaking sales cycles and consistently superior performance during each of his years with the company,” says Tom Coughlin, senior vice president of Comcast’s Beltway Region.

Merritt Construction Services Wins Several Awards
The Baltimore Metro chapter of the Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC), a non-profit trade association, has named Merritt Construction Services the winner of three Excellence Awards, two Merit Awards and a Green Project of the Year Award in their annual ABC Awards of Excellence Program. Merritt won the Excellence Awards for the following projects and categories: The Cruise Web – General Contractor Interior Fitout $500,000 – $1 Million; Mars Grocery Store – Bel Air – General Contractor Interior Fitout Over $1 Million; and Meadowridge 95, Building III – General Contractor New Project $5-$10 Million. In addition, Merritt Construction Services won Merit Awards for the following projects and categories: The Corner Stable – General Contractor Interior Fitout up to $500,000; and Schilling Green II – General Contractor New Project over $10 million. Also, Merritt’s Schilling Green II in Hunt Valley won a Green Project of the Year award winner.

Local Marketing And Print Companies Join Forces
Three local marketing and print companies have recently joined forces to create a new full service marketing company. Full House Press, Inc, Minuteman Press of Bel Air, and 2K Marketing, LLC have all merged their operations in two Bel Air locations. The new company, Full House/Minuteman Marketing & Print, will provide marketing and print services to local and regional businesses. Tom Kunkel, a Harford County native and president of the new company, comments, “We are excited to offer a truly full service marketing company to the region.”

The winners of the 2013 Maryland Small Business Week Awards include a wide range of business savvy Marylanders, including I95 BUSINESS Publisher Vicki Franz, who won the “Women in Business Champion of the Year. The winners were announced recently by Stephen D. Umberger, district director of the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Baltimore District Office, which oversees all SBA Maryland county offices, with the exception of Prince George’s and Montgomery. Eric McLauchlin, Esq., of Shaffer, McLauchlin & Stover, LLC, Bel Air, was awarded the “Attorney Advocate of the Year” Award. All winners will be honored during the 29th Annual Maryland Small Business Week Awards Luncheon to be held April 19 at Martin’s West.

Freedom Federal Credit Union Extends Helping Hand to Harford County Businesses
Freedom Federal Credit Union is reaching out with an offer to financially assist Harford County businesses that may have been financially impacted by the recent issues related to the Bel Air-based payroll service firm, AccuPay. APG Team Wins Big For Environmental Restoration
The Environmental Restoration Program, Directorate of Public Works’ Environmental Division at APG won the 2012 Secretary of the Army Environmental Award for Environmental Restoration. The award evaluates environmental programs on Army installations across the United States and recognizes programs that go above and beyond to improve the quality of the environment. “This is an especially prestigious honor for our APG team because they’ve taken a challenging program from its lows in the late ’80s and early ’90s to establish an efficient program that has restored the community’s trust through transparency and hard work,” says Vance Hobbs, the acting chief of the Environmental Division. “Members of the APG restoration team are skilled in many areas such as the fields of chemistry, geology, toxicology, biology, environmental science and engineering,” says Cindy Smith, Chief of the Environmental Planning and Sustainability Branch, “and they work tirelessly to identify and define environmental contamination and develop and implement innovative and cost effective cleanups.”

Colliers International in Baltimore, a full-service commercial real estate firm, played an instrumental role in the planned redevelopment and adaptive reuse of two former office buildings in downtown Baltimore. The buildings, located at 520 Park Ave. and 114 E. Lexington St. (pictured here), will be converted into a total of 275 apartments, which will begin delivering in late 2013. “Downtown Baltimore, according to one estimate, will see an increased demand for more than 1,000 apartments per year for the next five years,” said Steve Weiss, senior vice president of Colliers Baltimore. “Understanding that need, and using our extensive knowledge, resources and relationships, Colliers made possible two of the largest apartment conversions in the market.”

Maryland Business Incubation Association Approves New Programs
At its annual meeting on March 8, the Maryland Business Incubation Association (MBIA) approved applications for membership for two new full incubator programs and one new associate program – The Harford Business Innovation Center, Betamore, and The Charles County Innovation Center (planning underway) – bringing current membership to 23 business incubators and innovation centers. Also at MBIA’s annual meeting, officers were elected for 2013, including Clay Hickson of TowsonGlobal Business Incubator as president; Renee Winsky of the Chesapeake Innovation Center as vice president; Robert Snyder of Bethesda Green as secretary; and Neil Davis of the Emerging Technology Centers as treasurer.

Former PR Exec Wins Big In Army Communication, Outreach Awards
T’Jae Gibson of Abingdon won first place in the Community Relations-Special Events category at the major command level in a U.S. Army public affairs competition. She currently leads the Army Research Laboratory’s broadcast services area. She also serves as the public affairs office’s designate for public affairs planning and project integration. Her program, “Veg-ucational Outreach,” introduced area youth of all ages to the wonders and benefits of community gardening and the role science plays in the successful creation of community gardens. In addition, Gibson won second place in the Community Relations Program category for the Young Women in Science and Engineering College and Career Workshop.

New President and CEO at Atlantic Financial Federal Credit Union
The Board of Directors has appointed Matthew P. Piazza, CPA, as the new President and CEO effective March 7, 2013. Before accepting the position, Piazza headed the finance department as Vice President of Finance at AFFCU. His appointment follows the retirement of Rick Webb, who served as President and CEO just short of 20 years.

APG Wounded Warrior Receives Service Dog
A Wounded Warrior and employee with the U.S. Army Test and Evaluation Command (ATEC) at APG recently gained a new best friend, courtesy of a Hero Dogs, a Maryland charity that provides service dogs to injured or disabled veterans. Kelly Keck, an equal employment opportunity specialist in ATEC’s EEO Office, and Lady Liberty recently met when representatives from the charity introduced him to the 3-year-old golden retriever, called “Libby” for short.

The service dogs, known as Hero Dogs, enhance warriors’ lives by retrieving items, turning on lights, opening doors and various other tasks. Hero Dogs also help calm the symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder, according to Keck.

Norris Automotive Commercial Division Acquires Chesapeake Truck
The Commercial Division of Norris Automotive Group, the largest provider of commercial, heavy-duty truck parts, service and sales in the Baltimore/D.C. area, has acquired Chesapeake Truck, which has specialized in the sales and service of medium and heavy-duty trucks for over 40 years. Chesapeake Truck is a high-volume Ford truck dealer in the Baltimore area, providing new and used Ford truck sales and service in 13 locations.

Businesses and non-profits in need of retreat and event planning services can now turn to Vircity, as the Canton-based company is expanding into corporate event planning to further support businesses and non-profits looking to save money by outsourcing.

Colliers International is acquiring Manekin’s brokerage and property management group. The acquisition will make Colliers, which has offices in Baltimore and Columbia, the largest property manager of local commercial real estate, according to the Baltimore Business Journal.

Pier 1 Expands Its Presence in Harford County
Pier 1 Imports increased its warehouse leasing space in Harford County by announcing that it will lease 350,000 square feet of warehouse space in Aberdeen. The popular home furnishings company already leases over 600,000 square feet of warehouse space on Old Philadelphia Road in Aberdeen.

Humane Society of Harford County Joins Forces with Pets for Patriots
The Humane Society of Harford County Inc. (HSHC) and Pets for Patriots, Inc. have joined forces to give active, disabled and retired military service members and their families the gift of a pet’s unconditional love, while providing dogs and cats with a second chance at life. Through this partnership, Pets for Patriots will connect area loyal service men and women to HSHC, and HSHC will introduce them to eligible homeless dogs and cats that are looking for permanent homes. “Our goal is to help our adoption partners re-home harder-to-place pets that still have years of love and life to give,” says Beth Zimmerman, founder and executive director of Pets for Patriots. “Companion pets are known to provide real physical and emotional benefits to their guardians, including those suffering from post-combat stress, depression, isolation or physical disability.”

At the NVIDIA GPU Technology Conference (GTC) 2013, which was held in San Jose, Calif., in March, the SURVICE Engineering Company announced the release of Rayforce™, a high-performance raytracing library, as an open-source project. Version 2.0 of the library was specifically designed to leverage NVIDIA’s Kepler GPUs and currently provides the fastest known raytracer in the world, with performance that can exceed 1 billion rays/second on a single NVIDIA GTX 690 GPU. In addition to providing state-of-the-art raytracing performance, Rayforce™ provides accurate, in-order, multi-hit capabilities required for many physics-based simulations in which path traversal is as important as first-hit ray intersection.
