A Perry Hall business owner and mother of two, Tammy Gnau, 40, President of McCann Janitorial Services, Inc., has an incredible success story. Being self-supportive at the young age of 16, she founded her own cleaning business while finishing her last year of high school. Working from the trunk of her car, Tammy provided cleaning to residential clients, contractors, and in 1989 was granted her very first commercial cleaning contract.
While building her cleaning business, Tammy wanted to also pursue her childhood dream of flying. In the early 90’s, she moved to New York City to work with Eastern Airlines as a Flight Attendant. But Tammy knew quite quickly that she wanted to go to flight school and become a Pilot. Well that dream came true for her. Tammy earned her way from a Private Pilot, to a Flight Instructor, and finally a Flight Captain flying a corporate jet. Juggling a growing business, a flying career, and raising two children, Tammy found herself in a position to hire other hardworking people.
“That’s where it all started! It’s been so exciting!” says Tammy. Today, she has grown McCann Janitorial to provide jobs for a staff of over 45, and provides cleaning to over 50 business facilities throughout Baltimore and surrounding Counties. In fact, she still serves her first Client since 1989. “That’s an honor,” Tammy says. “We have long term partnerships with our clients and our staff.”
Tammy and her staff pride themselves as a one stop commercial cleaning service providing routine custodial maintenance, carpet cleaning, tile refinishing, window washing, emergency services and product sales. Being active members of the BSCAI and ISSA Organizations keeps McCann Janitorial connected to the ever-changing industry. Constantly improving their practices and processes keeps them in the lead. Tammy has joined with her clients and community often raising funds and awareness for several well-known foundations. She knows it’s all about being part of a great team.
It’s a delicate balance being a woman business owner and a mother for Tammy Gnau, however she wouldn’t want it any other way. “My plan is to continue to grow our company, continue to provide jobs for many families, and continue to serve our community businesses with the best services we can provide. Now that is something to smile about!” smiles Tammy.
